Swedish Weddings....

I know it's August and many Scandinavians are on semester ( vacation) and that's why all the Tribes are slow right now, but because we have a few members who are getting married, or who have gotten married in Sweden, or other Nordic countries, I thought it would be nice to start a wedding thread. Many Swedes don't get married, but live together and have children in an acceptable lifestyle called Sambo, but many do marry but I know very little about the weddings...

What are some traditions, toasts, sayings, preperations, ceremony, foods, bridal wear, wedding party entourage, best time of year, honeymoon ideals, engagement traditions and periods or anything associated with a Swedish wedding ?

Advice for moving to Sweden from the USA.

Okay, so my husband and I have decided to move to Sweden. I know one person who lived there for a short period of time, but has since moved back to the United States (where we live).

My husband is trying to apply to graduate school there; he needs to have a mentor of sorts, a scientist who works in the plant ecology field. Does anyone know how the finances are when you go to graduate school there? Is it different for someone migrating in? Graduate schools here pay you to go to school basically; that is your job while you are getting a masters degree or PHD. Also, do most colleges offer "Swedish as a second language" classes? Before we move, we will try to learn as much of the language as possible, but language studies outside of a university can be pretty pricey.

Basically, I'm trying to get some basic information for preparing to move there. I have read up on the applications a little bit. I know you have to apply for residency if you stay longer than 3 months, and apply for a work permit. Any advice you all could give me would be greatly appreciated!!! :-) Thanks.

Hi Everyone!

I'm heading to Angleholm for a good friends wedding in July. One thing that my brother and I would love to do is try to play golf. Does any one have suggestions for this?

I'm also looking for other fun things to do around that area. I'll be there from July 21 to July 29. Too quick!

Thanks!!!

Hello,

I'm visiting Iceland and Sweden in August. I've got it covered in Iceland, I know exactly what I'm doing. But, I don't know what to do while in Sweden. I'm in Stockholm a couple days and in Smaland a couple days with a relative. I have a couple more days that I don't know what to do with. I could go anywhere I suppose. Any suggestions?

Hi,
I have recently joined the Sweden and other Scandinavian tribes to meet friends who love Scandic culture and way of life, foods, travels and all that this beautiful region of the world has to offer. I traveled to Stockholm in July 2006 and fell in love with the city and thoroughly enjoyed my short stay and Gamla Stan! I have become an avid collector of Swedish Postage stamps (which are truly miniature piecesof art). I hope to write a book someday about `Stockholm through it's Stamps'. I get my fix of Swedish food by visits to regular visits to IKEA in Baltimore for pickled herring, Lingonberry jam and muesli!
I would love to make friends who have similar interests and learn Swedish beyond `Hej' and `Tack'!

Best Regards,
Arsh

I am applying for a study abroad semester next year and looking for information about two locations.

1 - Visby, Gotland, Sweden
2 - Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland

I am wondering how easy it would be for my boyfriend and I to rent an apartment, or a room in someones house (homestay)? Also wondering if this is a common thing to do in this part of Europe? One more . . . does anyone have any ideas what I should expect to pay in either place to rental/board?

I realize that both of these places would offer very different and unique experiences, and would love to hear everyones input, stories, links, websites, photos. (Also I would be there in the winter Jan - May). Anything people can say or encourage - We would love to make connections with people that live there that would be interested in meeting us, showing us cool things or just pointing us down the right direction. Thank you for reading this.

I am having a heck of a time trying to locate it. It has won several international awards but not stocked anywhere here that i know of. I try to find it on the internet and i find little articles here and there but that is it. I REALLY want to get some of this stuff. Anyone with info let me know.
Thanx,

Hello Everyone :)

I was just wondering if anyone knew any great cassettes/ work books etc for learning Swedish? I've been going out with a Swedish guy for over six months now and feel it's only right that I make an effort to learn his language - considering he's fluent in mine!

He's offered to teach me, but considering it's a long distance relationship from Mallorca to London (he's working over there) I don't think that's such a good idea! Plus we would probably become completely exhasperated with each other!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Love Carrie xxx

Dec. 13; Santa Lucia, the Queen of Lights

SANTA LUCIA - THE QUEEN OF LIGHTS

Throughout Sweden the feast day of Lucia, or Lucy, is celebrated as a festival of lights. In the early hours of the morning of December 13 a young woman, dressed in a white gown, and wearing a red sash and a crown of lingonberry twigs and blazing candles, would go from one farm to the next carrying a torch to light her way, bringing baked goods, stopping to visit at each house and returning home by break of day. Every village had its own Lucia. The custom is thought to have begun in some of the richer farming districts of Sweden and still persists although the crowns are now electric lights.

In Norway and Sweden it is still a custom on December 13 for a girl in a white dress (representing the Saint), to bring a tray of saffron buns and steaming coffee to wake the family. She is called the Lussibrud (Lucy bride) and her pastry (saffron buns) is Lussekattor (recipe and photo). Today many families have a Lucia-Queen in their own home, often the youngest daughter, who wakes the rest of the family with song.

Lucia symbolizes light and growth for human and beast as she emerges out of the darkness. She is said to have been beheaded by the sword during the persecutions of Diocletian at Catania in Sicily. Her body was later brought to Constantinople and finally to Venice, where she is now resting in the church of Santa Lucia. Because her name means "light" she very early became the great patron saint for the "light of the body"--the eyes. Many of the ancient light and fire customs of the Yuletide became associated with her day. Thus we find "Lucy candles" lighted in the homes and "Lucy fires" burned in the outdoors. Before the Reformation Saint Lucy's Day was one of unusual celebration and festivity because, for the people of Sweden and Norway, she was the great "light saint" who turned the tides of their long winter and brought the light of the day to renewed victory.

Before the calendar reform, her original feast day (the day of her martyrdom) happened to fall on the shortest day of the year. The winter solstice was December 13 by the Julian calendar rather than December 21, which it became with the change to the Gregorian calendar in the 1300s, linking it with the far older Yule and Winter festivals of pre-Christian times. Lucy's lore survived the Reformation and calendar reform, which brought the solstice to December 23.

Another Scandianavian custom was for children, on the eve of December 13, to write the word "Lussi" on doors, fences, and walls. In ancient times the purpose of this practice was to announce to the demons of winter that their reign was broken on Saint Lucy's Day, that the sun would return again and the days become longer. "Lucy fires" used to be burned in many parts of northern Europe on December 13. Into the bonfires people would throw incense, and while the flames rose, trumpets and flutes were playing to celebrate the changing of the suns's course.
I am just coming into a place in my life that I am interested in this aspect of my identitiy and am excited to learn lots...and specifically about traditional
Swedish diet and healing practices.

I was wondering what is the absolute best airfare deal people have ever gotten for a trip like this? So far, I'm getting an average ticket price of about $800-1000. Thanks!

Digging the swedish archives (genealogy)

I wrote in another thread: we (Sweden) have the worlds largest public material on the demographical changes, giving date of birth cause of death and such back to early 17th century,
Then I got the question:
How would I, an american access that data, I can secure my immigrant anscestors' sir-names and place of departure in sweden, but Id LOVE to be able to be able to dig deeper.
So I thought that whoever is more interested in swedish ancestors than our meals might wanna know this...

The short answer to those who want to know it an nothing further: There are three (of which I know) archives who are open for public and have all the swedish material. The house of genealogy in Leksand (close to were I live, The State Archive in Stockholm and another one in Linköping in the southern part of Sweden. I'm only familiar with the first two and I will tell you that you wont get any help concerning genealogy at The State Archive, they will only give you access to the material you want and that's that.
In Leksand you are able to get help (it cost some) and if you don't know any swedish at all it might be cheaper to order a genealogical table from them and then visit Sweden and chack out the places were they came from. If you are able to read some swedish or really want to do the investigation by yourself you can get some help from me if you plan well ahead. I might be there or can plan to be around.
In short these archives are open for anyone even foreigners, some charge you some are free. The cheaper the lousier service, just as a hotel...

More about swedish genealogy/history......

The first written documents in Sweden concerning the ordinary man is documents about land who were shared and redistributed among the villagers. These are dated in my parish to 1393 and forth. Then we had mills, mines and hammers which had complicated ownerships, these had to be written down so everybody knew their interests in those buildings. Fairly early 16th century. In 1571 Sweden lost Älvsborg it's only western port to Denmark, thus leaving us with Kalmar as our closest port to the bigger markets and also left us in fear for Danish privateers going thru Öresund. Denmark realized that Älvsborg would soon be swedish again by force if necessary and thus giving sweden a offer they couldn't turn down. They let sweden buy it back. This was by far the most costly achievement Sweden until then had to go thru (comparable to the Incas who had to fill a room full of gold so the Conqiustadors would let their king go alive) This achivement could be fulfilled by register all men owning a farm, a cow, a pig, coins of gold or any other similar richness. One tenth of this was taking out as a special ransom. There you had the first seed to the effective swedish goverment. It was then not so harsh (administratively speaking) when Sweden lost the castle again 1613. But it was worse for the swedish farmers who now needed four years to accomplish to gather the raised ransom.

These crisis in swedish internal and external affairs led to a very important step for nowdays genealogists. THe state and the church formed an even broader alliance than before. The priests started during early 1600's to collect facts about their parish. Names, birthdates and they also started to educate people in reading and then made tests in their ability to read. Why? Because if the people were able to read they themselves could read the Holy bible and become more pious and devoted to God AND to the king since Swedennow were protestant and the king thereby was the highest below God himself. These archives were also useful when you wanted to collect more taxes, find men to the armies and so forth. During these time of troubles the county of Dalecarlia (where I live ) made a unique agreement with the king. The themselves promised to gather 1200 men who would stand ready for battle as soon as the king wanted. In return the king lowered the taxes and with draw his enrolment in that county. In 2001 the swedish state shut down this regiment who then was one of the worlds oldest regiment still in use. This was the birth of the famous swedish "divided?" regiments. Every parish contributed with a certain number of men comparing to it's population (in men of course).

This alliance between the church and the state were most successful in Sweden. Not until the introduction of free spiritual churches during the second half of 1800's were there any religious unrest in Sweden. Also the grip over everyday man got tighter, if you were register at birth you were watched all your life, running away or starting a riot or a uprising were not anylonger a pleasent option. The last big peasent uprising went off 1743 the men of Dalecarlia (of course ;-) got sicj of the war with Russia who were handled terribly and marched to Stockholm. They held the city for a week until the goverment got the time to call in troops from counties further away. The regiments the called out at first put their muskets down and told the officers to sod off, they weren't going to shot their brothers and cousins. (Bad planning). During the short fight many of the troublemakers were shot down or hacked down by the cavalry. They weren't good equipted and many of them had home made morningstars, sickles, or sticks. They were no match for that time's most deadly army.

Alas, they are many things who forged this country. Many more to tell. But I think I stop there and let you ask if you are interested. If not I hope you haven't read this far ;-)

So, I don't know anything about Vaxjo and would love it if someone could give me any ideas on what to do there because I may be staying for a few days. Is it a big city?

Hello all...

I am in Stockholm at the moment, however it's not for good reasons as I will attend the funeral of a young boy today. I have stayed a few days with his family and it has been an intense time for my heart. I know their lives are utterly changed, but I hope somehow they are able to find peace eventually.

Its so cold here that it could freeze the balls off a brass monkey! At least the sun is out!! I got to stock up on Marabou bars and Gavalia tho, so that's a good thing to be sure!

Signing out,

Sig

What local SWEDISH holiday events are planned in YOUR community?

Many communities have local organizations which have been formed in order to maintain a Swedish culture and heritage in the US. Each year many of these groups organize traditional events. Coming up are celebrations such as LUCIA DAY, which traditionally falls each year on December 13. In Portland, OR, the Immanual Lutheran Church is hosting a wonderful LUCIA celebration with live musical performances, and even a LUCIA court. This event takes place on Saturday December 10th this year.

"New Sweden" is a very progressive group in the Pacific NW with extremely strong ties to Sweden and our Swedish heritage. Check out their website which contains a plethera of information and helpful links.
I wrote the article, they added a co-writer as they included a side bar on Calatrava as the architect. I concentrated on the design mostly.. Check it out. Beautiful mag as well. Lots of articles and pics on cool stuff so well worth the 49,75 DKR ( 49,50 SEK). It is sold in Sweden as well.

It was one of three paintings stolen by armed and masked robbers in 2000 from the National Museum in Stockholm.

"Works like this are not some expendable commodity. They are priceless treasures," said Loraine Brown, a special agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The recovery of the Renoir painting, which depicts a young girl, was revealed after police in Denmark arrested four people -- two Iraqi nationals, a Swede and a Gambian -- in a raid Thursday on a downtown Copenhagen hotel."
""That's still the ultimate goal, to sail across the Atlantic in the Viking-style," McDonald said.

Christopher Columbus was acclaimed for centuries as the man who discovered America in 1492.

But in recent decades, more evidence has come to light showing that Icelander Leif Ericsson and the Vikings were the first Europeans to set foot on the American continent in the year 1,000.

Viking longboats let Norse warriors land, pillage and plunder large parts of Europe and sail off knowing that no other vessels could catch up.""

Fun "Culture Shock" stories.

OK, with Pozzo on his trip to the US and sending us back smoke signals of his weird and wonderful encounters with things like shower faucets and the like, what were some of the things you encountered in Sweden or US ( if Scandinavian.)

Ok I'll start...

After dating my now ex-Swede, ( of 4 years), and spending lots of time with him in Sweden, it was time to meet his family. His dad is this highly intellectual lawyer come minister, and his mother is a teacher. So I was a bit nervous to meet them. I started taking Swedish language lessons at the time, so I was practicing some greetings and simple things to say to them. :) hehe

Anyway...They were having a dinner party for us, and a nice välkommen for me. The kitchen had just been remodelled, and me, being an interior designer wanted to beable to say things in Swedish regarding it. As you know, the Swedish word for kitchen is kök, ( pronounced shooook, first k as "sh"), and the slang term in Swedish for penis is kuk ( pronounced as seen..with the the first k as "kay").

So we all sit at the table, all the formalities aside, and feeling a bit more relaxed ( wine helped hehe), I wanted to compliment them on thier kitchen...( Ya Know where this is going, right?) ...so while I take a shot...I intend to say.."Vilket vackert kök ni har...," as I looked at his father, but I forgot the "K" was a "sh" sound and pronounced it as a K, it came out to a whole different meaning! My guy spit out a mouth full of wine and fell, literally on the floor laughing his ASS off...The parents are wide mouthed, and his siblings are giggling!! BF is uncontrollably laughing, pounding his fists on the floor ( NO he didn't set it up..he had no idea of my plans) !! I'm stunned! I'm like..has he gone nuts??!! He leaves the room and calls out to me, by this time everyone at the dinner table is laughing and mumbling amoungst themselves in Swedish!! I was soooo confused!! I went to BF and he explained..through his laughing fits what I had just said to his father!! OMG! I ran to the bedroom and would not leave it for 2 whole days! I was so embarrassed !!I said this to a MINISTER NO LESS! I can tell you that I was so embarrassed !!

Needless to say, his father completely understood what had just happened as he is very fluent in English and know that an English K was not pronounced "sh." I think he even forgave me...LOL! It was a long time before I stopped being too embarrassed to meet with his father again!

Tack för senast? I think NOT! LOL

That's my biggest faux-pa in Sweden....:)~

The last report from my trip in the States is on display at Old fashion hospitality. It's short but it's good.

In a month I'll have some pics to show. (Used slides so it'll take sometime to develop, dry, frame and scan...)

Hi everyone!!!!

I'm travelling to Sweden in September.

I've bought a good guide but would really appreciate any advice, comment, suggestion about places to visit, where to eat, drink,etc... main destinations will be Gothenburg and Sockholm.

Can't wait to go! Can't wait to read all you've got to say!!!

Thanks a lot!

Cheers,

E

PS: I'm specially interested in visiting the places where the locals go...touristic areas are the same everywhere, will visit anyway though...but I want to know the real Sweden =)

Swedish Design - San Francisco Expo, and New Book

Sigrid,

>> When is it? I have never been to San Fran! You have an extra sofa? :) <<

Sure, I've got the world's most comfortable sofabed - really! You'd never know it was one, either as a sofa or as a bed. The house is teensy and very cluttered, in need of work and some redesign (putting up the drapes and pictures would be a start <g>), looking rather like I just moved in, but if you can live with that, you're certainly welcome. It's a long story, but I'm in the process of getting it all sorted out. In the end, though, I've just got too much stuff and not enough house, and I haven't gotten around to finishing designing the new storage units I need or finding a contractor to finish some other work.

Here's the link to the information on the expo - http://www.sde2005.com/. It's only a one day deal, so I'm not sure it would be worth the trip out here for just that, but it's being held in one of our biggest design center showrooms, so there's plenty else (as well as all of the Bay Area, of course!) to keep one busy.

Although it seems to be primarily targetted at designers and retailers, it's also open to the public, for anyone else who might be interested.

Also check out the book _New Scandinavian Design_ on Amazon, edited by Raul Cabra, one of the planned speakers, a brilliant multidisciplinary designer who teaches at my school. Just what you always expected a nice Venezuelan boy to be publishing, eh <g>? (Check out his portfolio on his website while you're at it, too, for more of his work. It is mind-bogglingly excellent.)

The Only Book About Loreena McKennitt

I just wrote a book called "Travels With Loreena McKennitt - My Life as a Friend”. According to one London journalist, "It's not only a must for every Loreena McKennitt fan but for anyone interested in the phenomenon of "Celebrity"”. The book is a behind-the-scenes look into the world of stardom and the consequences of fame. It is a gripping tale focusing on the relationship of two close friends and the impact on the friendship when one rockets to superstardom.

Many of you know Loreena through her music and her concert appearances. My book is about Loreena behind the footlights, about Loreena not only as a talented and famous musician but as a real human being.

For more information about me, my books and how to order signed and dedicated copies, please visit my website at http://www.niemaash.com or email me at purpleinc@fastmail.fm.
places ? I don't know if they were talking about food-
lodging , or *other* stuff... I know liquor is really
high because of state taxes and things a normal
citizen might buy my possibly be eligible for some
kind of subsidiary compensation/govt' coupons
and such - so what's the REAL scoop ? Maybe my

Snotty Swedes?

OK- here's the deal:

I'm an American of Swedish descent, raised in the midwest to be thoroughly proud of my ancestry-

-however, over the last few years I've noticed something... when I mention this to visiting/emigrant Swedes, they just instantly get kind of contemptuous and cop an attitude- "Oh really? Do you actually *speak* Swedish?" or something like that.

There were two possible explanations that came to mind: either they've been accosted frequently by other Swedish-Americans eager to share their common heritage, or the Swedes that visit the U.S. are from some wealthy, snobby socio-economic background and treat everyone like shit. Or- perhaps they were just eager to soak up America in the first place and are totally uninterested in reminders of things Svensk...?

Thoughts?

Festival! "A taste of Stockholm"

More info here: http://www.smakapastockholm.se/

During six hectic days, from 1st to 6th June 2005, Stockholm will put on display the best the city can offer in terms of food, entertainment, culture and sports.

”Smaka På Stockholm” or ”A Taste Of Stockholm” is a new annual event arranged for the 2nd year by the organisation The Restaurants Day in cooperation with the Stockholm Visitors Board.

Smaka på Stockholm is Sweden’s largest annual event with more than six hundred and fifty thousand visitors. Kungsträdgården is, as usual, the hub with a fantastic variety of food and drinks. A wide selection of Stockholm’s best restaurants will participate along with the best chefs in Sweden during this six-day event. While you’re there don’t miss "The Chef’s Theatre" – Kockteatern, a large arena with room for more than 400 spectators and 6 cooking duel’s every day. And again it doesn’t cost you anything to watch.

You can also see "The Stockholm Waiters Race" on the 4th of June, over 200 waiters and waitresses will compete for the title "The fastest service in town".

trivia: The English word "gun"...

...apparently comes from Old Norse. What are modern Swedish words for "war"?

---

Gun
This word for a firearm most likely comes from a Scandinavian woman's name. It was and is common practice to name siege engines and later cannon after women. Two famous examples are Mons Meg, the 15th century mortar that can be seen at Edinburgh castle, and Big Bertha of WWI fame. In this case, a weapon or weapons seem to have been named after a woman or women named Gunnhildr, and the name transferred over to the general sense.

Both gunnr and hildr mean war in Old Norse, making it an apt name for a weapon, even though there is no historical personage of significance named Gunhildr. There is at least one known example of a particular siege engine named Gunnhildr. A 1330 munitions list from Windsor Castle reads:

Una magna balista de cornu quae vocatur Domina Gunilda. (A large ballista from Cornwall called Lady Gunilda. The difference in spelling is due to lack of standardized spellings of that age.)
Variations on the general word gun appear in English records written in Latin starting in 1339. The first recorded use of of the word, gonne, in English is in 1384 by Chaucer.

An alternate explanation, but one that has less evidence to support it, is that the word is a variation on mangonel, a type of siege engine.

This is a fun subject...no meanies please! LOL

Well, my first shocker was the very first time I was in Sweden, my ex put ketchup on his pasta! I was flabbergasted!! So, I go out, buy all the proper ingredients to make a sauce, slave over the stove all day, set a romantic table, cooked the pasta....

We sit down to eat pasta to be smothered in wonderful homemade marinara sauce mmmmmmm. He put my sauce on the side of his pasta, and went to the fridge and took out the ketchup and put it on TOP of his pasta! Not only that...he proceeded to cut the pasta up on his plate into itty-bitty pieces! Arrgggg! I thought it was just him, but now have learned since that it's a Swedish thing with the ketchup and cutting up the pasta!

Italians beware! The Swedish are coming! :)~

Swedes, feel free to tell a story of a place you went to and experienced such a thing as well.

I will tell mine when I have a bit more time. It has something to do with kitchens...it isn't boring, trust me! I wanted to crawl inside a hole and die!! :)

Interesting stuff that I wasn't aware of, from Wikipedia...
--------------------------------------------
Sweden-Norway

The Kingdom of Sweden-Norway is a term sometimes, but erroneously, used to refer to the kingdoms of Sweden and Norway between 1814 and 1905, when they were united under one monarch in a personal union, following the Convention of Moss, on August 14, and the Norwegian constitutional revision of November 4. On the same day, the Norwegian parliament elected Charles XIII king of Norway.

The Act of Union, which was given royal assent on August 6, 1815, was implemented differently in the two countries. In Norway it was a part of constitutional law known as "Rigsakten", and in Sweden it was a set of provisions under regular law and was known as "Riksakten". The Congress of Vienna, which oversaw numerous territorial changes in post Napoleonic Europe, did not object to the union of the Norwegian and Swedish crowns.

Sweden and Norway had previously been united under the same crown on two occasions, from 1319 to 1343, and briefly from 1449 to 1450 in opposition to Christian of Oldenburg who by the Danes was elected king of the Kalmar Union.

Following growing dissatisfaction with the union in Norway, the parliament unanimously declared its dissolution on June 7, 1905. This unilateral action met with Swedish threats of war. A plebiscite on August 13 confirmed the parliamentary decision by a majority of 368,208 to 184. Negotiations in Karlstad led to agreement with Sweden September 23 and mutual demobilization. Both parliaments revoked the Act of Union October 16, and the deposed king Oscar II of Sweden renounced his claim to the Norwegian throne and recognized Norway as an independent kingdom on October 26. The Norwegian parliament offered the vacant throne to Prince Carl of Denmark, who accepted after another plebiscite had confirmed the monarchy. He arrived in Norway on November 25, 1905, taking the name Haakon VII.

a friend of mine, who is swedish, just invited me to stay with him in south sweden this summer. however, if i went i would have to work. he said he would help me find a job, and everything seemed like it would work out.

but now i have found that i would have to wait about 6 weeks before i could work to get a work permit, and that's only if i get a job offer from a potential employer.

i was only planning to live and work there this summer, and i would only be there for about 2 months, so that situation completely rules out the plans i had. i only wanted to get a job as a waitress or bartender.

does anyone know of a way around this?

Swedish Ecology & Camping

When I was in Sweden I was interested in finding out what sort of diversity exists in Sweden.

Does anyone know where to find a list of mammals found in Sweden?

Are there bears, wolves, otters???

Also, does anyone know about camping in Sweden? Is it popular? What sort of camping do Swedes do (tent, trailer (caravan), are there any wilderness areas with accessible camping?)?

Thanks,
Rob

Best princess cake in the SF/Bay Area?

There is a konditori in Tiberon that is pretty good, but Katrina Rozelle bakery, which specializes in wedding cakes, makes the best I have tasted outside of Sweden. They are in Oakland on College Ave. NOTE: They make the princess cake in the summer with butter cream and NOT whipped cream, so you have to order it specifically with whipped cream, other seasons they make it traditionally.

Anyone else have a good suggestion for princess cake in the SF/Bay Area?
